When to call 911

The first words you will hear are: 9-1-1.What is your emergency? Make sure your answer is as clear as possible. State first if it is a crime, fire, or medical emergency.

Deccribe your emergency. Stay on the line, answer all questions calmly and clearly. Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to!

Know your specific location. The dispatcher will ask you your name, address and phone number and what is happening.

The priority of response is in relation to the persons or property being endangered. Use your law enforcement agency's regular phone number if the situation is not an emergency. Non-emergency includes crimes which already occurred, including burglary or other crimes which are non-life threatening.

Commit to calling in all suspicious activity without delay. Did you know that 911 can be called from any pay phone without depositing money? Did you know that 911 operators are trained emergency medical dispatchers? They can guide you through emergency procedures over the phone, and give pre-arrival instructions until medics arrive.
